Local Attractions

Steedman Estate (Casa del Herrero), Montecito, CA, is considered one of the most fully developed and intact examples of America’s Country Place Era that took form and flourished on the West Coast in the early 20th century. The estate features the landscape design of Ralph K. Stevens, Lockwood de Forest, Jr., and Francis T. Underhill and the architecture of George Washington Smith and other West Coast designers under the direction of the owner, George Steedman, who was a collector of antiquities and an amateur silversmith.

Ganna Walska Lotusland, a 37-acre botanical estate garden containing subtropical and tropical plants from around the world, is located in a residential neighborhood in Montecito, just east of Santa Barbara. Lotusland is home to several extraordinary collections of rare cycads, cacti, palms and euphorbias. Additional gardens feature ferns, aloes, succulents, lotuses, water lilies, and bromeliads. Themed gardens include the blue garden, theatre garden, butterfly garden and a Japanese garden. Other classic features are the water stairs, topiary garden, horticultural clock and a parterre.

For over 60 years the Music Academy of the West has provided exceptional young musicians with the opportunity for advanced study and intensive performance in a uniquely beautiful and supportive environment.

Parks and Outdoor Activities

Manning Park is a peaceful, beautiful place. The former estate was donated to Santa Barbara County and now provides recreation opportunities for the community. Upper Manning Park facilities include a variety of picnic areas, ball field, tennis courts, and a renovated, historic carriage house, which is available for use by non-profit community youth groups (reservable in advance, free of charge). The lower park includes a playground, picnic facilities and large lawn area.
